Echoes of Chaos

All around me is burning,

there is tragedy in the air

and my friend calls to

break even more news.

A man stabbed a girl on the train

and they’re trapped underground.

My friend is claustrophobic and can’t breathe,

I am hanging on the phone

hoping he doesn’t have an episode.

A mob appears in front of me carrying placards

asking immigrants to leave their home.

The black girl in hijab almost falling

from her head is in tears, she drags

her feet in a run and the mob trolled

her until she disappears into a corner.

The mob headed my way,

I am worried about myself in this city

acting all foreign.

My friend is breathless

on the phone, my

brown skin is layered with sweat,

I caught a tear escaping my eyes.

Everything I know is burning

and I can’t breathe.
